Congratulations to Randy Newman, who won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "We Belong Together" from the Pixar animated film Toy Story 3. Newman performed the song at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards ceremony last night at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, where he received his golden statuette, his second Oscar win and 20th nomination. Newman received a Grammy Award for Best Score for Toy Story 3 earlier this month; it was his sixth Grammy win. His first Oscar win came in 2002 for "If I Didn't Have You," from Pixar's Monsters, Inc.

"I'm very grateful for this and surprised," Newman said in accepting the award. You can watch his full acceptance speech below.

Nonesuch Records will release Newman's latest album, The Randy Newman Songbook Vol. 2, on May 10. On the album, Newman takes a fresh look at both classic and more recent work in new solo recordings of his celebrated songs. The New York Times said of 2003's Songbook Vol. 1: “The great craftsmanship is more apparent in the stripped-down context.” The Associated Press said, “Few singer-songwriters could inject more new life into solo piano versions of their work than Randy Newman.”

Songbook Vol. 2, which was co-produced by Mitchell Froom and Lenny Waronker, includes songs spanning from the 1968 album Randy Newman (“Cowboys”) through Newman’s most recent, 2008’s Harps and Angels (“Laugh and Be Happy” and “Losing You”).

Newman resumes his North American tour in advance of the record release tomorrow night at the Music center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland, and heads to New York City later this week.

Following Newman's performance at The Sheldon in St. Louis Friday night, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said: "If Newman's songs qualify as art, they also engage the crowd in such a way that once the show is over, it's sure to be remembered—and fondly."

The Library of Congress has acquired the collection of manuscripts, instruments, costumes, video and audio recordings, and more from Kronos Quartet and its non-profit organization, Kronos Performing Arts Association. “It’s gratifying to know that Kronos’ legacy will be preserved in perpetuity alongside the manuscripts and other treasures of so many other influential musicians from the US and around the world," said KPAA Executive Director Janet Cowperthwaite. "We are perhaps even more excited to reflect upon all the musicians and scholars who will have access to these materials in years to come, informing their own work and carrying Kronos’ inspiration and influence into the future.” The Library also appointed Kronos founder, artistic director, and violinist David Harrington as the Kluge Chair in Modern Culture and inducted Kronos’ 1992 album Pieces of Africa into the National Recording Registry.
