Rokia Traoré was the guest on BBC Radio 3's In Tune yesterday, performing two songs from her forthcoming album, Né So—"Kolokani" and "Mayé"—as well as "Kélé Mandi," from her album Bowmboï. She also spoke with BBC Radio 4's Front Row about the new album. Traoré begins a two-month tour at Roundhouse in London on February 6.

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Rokia Traoré, who celebrated a birthday earlier this week, was the guest on BBC Radio 3's In Tune yesterday, performing two songs from her forthcoming album, Né So—"Kolokani" and "Mayé"—as well as "Kélé Mandi," from her 2004 Nonesuch Records debut album, Bowmboï. Traoré was also a guest on BBC Radio 4's Front Row last night, discussing the new album, which is due February 12. You can hear that interview at bb.co.uk as well.

Né So receives a raves review in the latest issue of Uncut magazine. "Brave, challenging and arrestingly original," writes reviewer Nigel Williamson, "Traoré may just have gone and made the finest indie-rock album to emerge from arguably the world's most musical continent."

The album, produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey, Tracy Chapman), comprises 10 original songs plus a cover of Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" and features guest performances by John Paul Jones and Devendra Banhart, along with Burkinabe drummer Moïse Ouattara, Ivorian bassist Matthieu N’guessan, and Malian ngoni player Mamah Diabaté.

    The Library of Congress has acquired the collection of manuscripts, instruments, costumes, video and audio recordings, and more from Kronos Quartet and its non-profit organization, Kronos Performing Arts Association. “It’s gratifying to know that Kronos’ legacy will be preserved in perpetuity alongside the manuscripts and other treasures of so many other influential musicians from the US and around the world," said KPAA Executive Director Janet Cowperthwaite. "We are perhaps even more excited to reflect upon all the musicians and scholars who will have access to these materials in years to come, informing their own work and carrying Kronos’ inspiration and influence into the future.” The Library also appointed Kronos founder, artistic director, and violinist David Harrington as the Kluge Chair in Modern Culture and inducted Kronos’ 1992 album Pieces of Africa into the National Recording Registry.

    Vagabon (aka Laetitia Tamko) will support the band Crumb on tour this October. The shows begin in California—Santa Cruz, Oakland, and Sacramento—then head to Salt Lake City and Denver and on to Texas—Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso—and Albuquerque and back to California to close out the tour in Santa Ana, San Diego, and Los Angeles.
