Pianist Philip Bush reports in his blog, Mostly Music in the Midlands, from his weeklong tour through France with the Steve Reich Ensemble and conductor Alan Pierson performing The Cave, Reich's early '90s video-opera collaboration with Beryl Korot:

We had shows in Caen and Le Havre; the latter was particularly interesting as we played a venue called Le Volcan, which was designed by famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (who pretty much designed the city of Brasilia). We all guessed late 1950s or 60s based on the look and the wear-and-tear we saw ... amazed to learn it was built just after 1980 ... Tonight we are at the Cité de la Musique in Paris. This is the 50th performance of The Cave since its premiere in Vienna in 1993. Virtually all the same singers and musicians since the beginning.

For ticket information to tonight's performance at the Cité de la Musique and tomorrow's final performance of the tour, visit cite-musique.fr.

Brad Mehldau’s After Bach II and Après Fauré are out now on Nonesuch Records. The Bach album comprises four preludes and one fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, as well as the Allemande from the fourth Partita, interspersed with seven compositions or improvisations by Mehldau inspired by the complementary works of Bach—including Mehldau’s Variations on Bach’s Goldberg Theme. On Après Fauré, Mehldau performs four nocturnes, from a thirty-seven-year span of Gabriel Fauré’s career, as well as a reduction of an excerpt from the Adagio movement of his Piano Quartet in G Minor. Here Mehldau’s four compositions that Fauré inspired are presented in a group, bookended by two sections featuring the French composer’s works.
