The Black Keys got the new year off to a rocking good start as musical guests on the first Saturday Night Live episode of the year over the weekend, playing two songs off their Grammy-nominated album Brothers: "Howlin' for You" and "Tighten Up." The Black Keys are in New York City this week to kick off the new year and the new season of NBC’s Saturday Night Live with host Jim Carrey. This appearance comes after a monumentally successful 2010 for the duo, which they closed out with three sold-out New Year's shows at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom. The Chicago Tribune says the band is an example of "how modern artists can earn mainstream success without sacrificing integrity," their live show exhibiting the "combination of persistence and persuasion that helped the band own 2010."

The Black Keys are set to close out what's been a banner year with a return to Chicago for sold-out New Year's Eve shows. Last year, bandmates Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney rang in the new year with two nights at the Riviera. This time around, the band plays not two but three sold-out shows at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom December 30 and 31 and January 1. The Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot spoke with Carney and takes a look at all that's happened since those Riviera shows in what Kot calls their "breakthrough year."

AfroCubism was featured on NPR's All Things Considered on Sunday. "The group features musicians from Cuba and Mali," says host Guy Raz, "and it's a kind of hybrid of the best sounds from these two musical traditions." Guest Betto Arcos of Global Village says "every song is just fantastic." AfroCubism makes the year's best lists in the Boston Globe, as does David Byrne/Fatboy Slim's Here Lies Love and The Black Keys' Brothers, which tops a Minneapolis Star Tribune list. The Star Tribune 's classical music critic lists Steve Reich's Double Sextet / 2x5 and Gidon Kremer's De Profundis. The Los Angeles Times picks Brad Mehldau's Highway Rider among the best in jazz.

On January 8, 2011, The Black Keys will kick off the new season of NBC’s Saturday Night Live with host Jim Carrey. Additionally the album was named iTunes’ Album of the Year and Rolling Stone’s No. 2 Album of the Year. The record also tops American Songwriter’s year-end list and is featured on round-ups at NPR, Time magazine, and Magnet, among many others. The duo is also currently featured on the cover of Spin magazine’s Best of 2010 issue as Artist of the Year.

The Black Keys have been named an Artist of the Year by SPIN magazine! "The Black Keys are closing out a year that saw their sixth album, Brothers—a dark, swampy, R&B-inspired stomper—become an indisputable hit," says SPIN in the cover story on the band. Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach discuss the making of the album and the unprecedented response the band received upon the album's release. "We had no idea what to expect," says Auerbach. "All we knew was that we felt we had made the best record we could and were pretty excited about that." SPIN has also named Brothers to the magazine's list of the 40 Best Albums of 2010 and "Tighten Up" to its list of the 20 Best Songs of 2010.

The Black Keys' Brothers lands at No. 2 on NPR's All Songs Considered listeners' picks of The Best Music of 2010. Also on the list are Carolina Chocolate Drops' Genuine Negro Jig and Ben Folds and Nick Hornby's Lonely Avenue. All Songs Considered producer Robin Hilton says of Brothers: "I think this is their fattest, richest, most sonically diverse album that they've done." Philip Selway's Familial has made the NPR All Songs Considered list for Best Album Covers of 2010. Carolina Chocolate Drops' Genuine Negro Jig is No. 4 on the Americana Music Association's Top 100 Albums of the Year.

"This past year has been good for new music from the more established names in African music," including AfroCubism, says NPR. Indeed, AfroCubism has made Barnes & Noble's list of the Top 10 Albums of any genre for 2010; The Black Keys' Brothers comes in at No. 5 among the best in rock. Brothers and Ali and Toumani, from Ali Farka Touré and AfroCubism's Toumani Diabaté, make The Huffington Post's Top 10 Albums of 2010.

Tune in to KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic today to hear the Black Keys perform tracks from their album, Brothers, which host Jason Bentley rated No. 1 on his Top Albums of 2010. The album comes in at No. 7 on TIME's Top 10 Albums of the Year; the magazine calls it "a classic, unmuddled rock-'n'-roll record." The Black Keys' Brothers has been named Album of the Year at iTunes, which says the band "hit upon a postmodern groove that honors the past while ambling toward the future." Also included among iTunes' Best of 2010 are Steve Reich's Double Sextet / 2x5, named Best Contemporary Classical Album, and Bill Frisell's Disfarmer, for Best Instrumental Jazz Album. Brothers also tops American Songwriter magazine's year-end list and NPR's Weekend Edition Sunday's Director's Cut Gift Guide.

The Black Keys' album Brothers has landed at No. 2 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the Best Albums of 2010. "The duo boil it down on their best record yet: vivid tunes stripped bare and rubbed raw, with hot splashes of color and hooks popping through like compound fractures," raves Rolling Stone. "It's rock minimalism pushed to the max." The magazine also places the album track "Everlasting Light" at No. 11 on the list of the Best Singles of 2010.

Congratulations to all the Nonesuch artists who were nominated for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, announced last night by The Recording Academy: The Black Keys, Laurie Anderson, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Punch Brothers, Stephen Sondheim, and World Circuit / Nonesuch Records artists Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté. Together, these artists' 2010 releases garnered an impressive 11 nominations, including a remarkable six nominations for The Black Keys' latest Nonesuch release, Brothers.
