Rhiannon Giddens was on The Daily Show to talk with guest host Michael Kosta about her career, winning the Pulitzer Prize in Music, and her song "Another Wasted Life," from her new album, You're the One, which she also performed on the show. The song aims to raise awareness for the stories and voices of those who have experienced the injustices of the criminal legal system. She partnered with the Pennsylvania Innocence Project on a fundraising initiative and a music video for the song featuring 22 wrongfully convicted people, clients of the organization, who collectively spent more than 500 years in prison for crimes they did not commit.

Rhiannon Giddens was the guest on The Daily Show. She sat down for an interview with guest host Michael Kosta to talk about her career, winning the Pulitzer Prize in Music, and her song "Another Wasted Life," from her new album, You're the One, which she also performed on the show. You can watch the interview and performance here:

You’re the One is Giddens’ first album of all original songs and has received major acclaim. "Another Wasted Life," featured on the album, was inspired by the tragic story of Kalief Browder. Browder was wrongfully incarcerated at New York City’s Rikers Island for three years, where he was subjected to nearly two years of solitary confinement. Giddens wrote it as a reminder of the human toll exacted by wrongful convictions and the importance of prison reform.

She has also collaborated with the Pennsylvania Innocence Project on a fundraising initiative and a music video for "Another Wasted Life," released earlier this month on the tenth annual Wrongful Conviction Day. The video features twenty-two wrongfully convicted people, clients of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project, who collectively spent more than 500 years in prison for crimes they did not commit. It aims to raise awareness for the stories and voices of those who have experienced the injustices of the criminal legal system. This coming Saturday, Rhiannon Giddens will host the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD broadcast of the opera Dead Man Walking, based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir. The broadcast will be shown in movie theaters worldwide at 12:55pm ET that day, with an encore at 1pm ET on October 25. The series is shown in over two thousand theaters in over fifty countries around the world. More information and participating theaters can be found here.

The Library of Congress has acquired the collection of manuscripts, instruments, costumes, video and audio recordings, and more from Kronos Quartet and its non-profit organization, Kronos Performing Arts Association. “It’s gratifying to know that Kronos’ legacy will be preserved in perpetuity alongside the manuscripts and other treasures of so many other influential musicians from the US and around the world," said KPAA Executive Director Janet Cowperthwaite. "We are perhaps even more excited to reflect upon all the musicians and scholars who will have access to these materials in years to come, informing their own work and carrying Kronos’ inspiration and influence into the future.” The Library also appointed Kronos founder, artistic director, and violinist David Harrington as the Kluge Chair in Modern Culture and inducted Kronos’ 1992 album Pieces of Africa into the National Recording Registry.
