Pat Metheny kicked off his Orchestrion tour in France this weekend and has now added stops in Asia in June. The New York Times calls Metheny "easily one of the most enterprising jazz musicians of his generation" and says of seeing it all in action that "the performance dazzled," not least the album's "shimmering, labyrinthine title track, an overture of palpable ambition." Billboard says Orchestrion "surprises and exhilarates." The Cleveland Plain Dealer gives it an A-; the Detroit Free Press says Metheny opens up "new avenues of creativity."

Pat Metheny begins his four-month tour of Europe and the United States this weekend with two performances at Coutances Theater in northern France. Saturday's opener will be the first time Metheny reveals the instruments and magic behind his latest Nonesuch release, Orchestrion. It "sounds really interesting on CD," says Wired, "sort of like a jazz gamelan with an extraterrestrial twist." The Independent hears elements of Nancarrow, Adams, and Zappa in the title track.

Orchestrion, Pat Metheny's adventurous new "solo" recording, is out now. The Guardian calls it "Metheny's most ambitious experiment," one the Star-Ledger says has paid off: "The chiming, undulating result feels organic and joyous." All About Jazz would agree, calling it "not just an unqualified and unequivocally successful experiment, but as one of the most innovative and compositionally profound albums of his career."

"I didn't know quite what to expect when I started this whole thing, especially making a record with it," says Pat Metheny of his latest project, Orchestrion, and the forthcoming Nonesuch release of the same name. "The result is absolutely nothing like I ever would have imagined." That's from a new video launching today at nonesuch.com/media, in which Pat takes viewers behind the scenes of Orchestrion. Says The Guardian: "The Orchestrion reconciles his love of old-fashioned, unamplified live performance with his restless urge to innovate."

Pat Metheny settled into his home studio in New York City with a new baritone guitar one November evening in 2001 to experiment with a low "Nashville tuning." The result is the Grammy-winning One Quiet Night, now reissued on Nonesuch. Audiophile Audition gives the album four stars, describing it as "an intimate performance featuring Metheny's baritone guitar and his imagination ... a confidential, quiet affair, exemplified by the title track, which follows an unadorned template: extemporizing on a single melody and sustaining a solitary mood, in this case a lightly rural and rustic feeling."
