Punch Brothers recently announced via Twitter that they've "just put the finishing touches on the 18th of 18 songs that we've earmarked for our new record." Even with that to look forward to, the band also has two New York performances of A Prairie Home Companion coming in early December. Until then, Paste has published a video interview with the Punch Brothers from the CMJ music conference in which the guys give some insight into their instruments.

During Punch Brothers recent tour, the Albany Times Union, declared: "Chris Thile is more than just a mandolinist. He's a musician." Thile puts that musicianship to good use in a concert with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra of works by Bach, Bartók, and Radiohead and his own Mandolin Concerto tonight. "I don't acknowledge that there are anything but superficial differences between various types of good music," Thile tells the Birmingham News. "Music is music is music."

Punch Brothers returns to Carnegie Hall for its first performance in Stern Auditorium this Friday, following the 2007 premiere of The Blind Leaving the Blind in Carnegie's Zankel Hall, the work later featured on the band's Nonesuch debut, Punch. To celebrate, Nonesuch is offering two free tickets to the show, plus a copy of the album Punch. Winners will also receive free entry into the concert's after party, courtesy of the makers of the forthcoming film about the Punch Brothers, How to Grow a Band.

Punch Brothers' fall tour is headed to the University of Michigan's Power Center in Ann Arbor tonight. Though the band's 2008 Nonesuch debut, Punch, also marks the band's first as Punch Brothers, "they’ve already made their mark on the newgrass/new-acoustic scene," says AnnArbor.com in an interview with fiddler Gabe Witcher, "as they’ve created their own, unique variation on that ambitious hybrid of bluegrass, jazz and classical-music elements."

Chris Thile recently premiered his Mandolin Concerto with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and performs it again this weekend with the Oregon Symphony, after which, Thile joins his fellow Punch Brothers for a three-week US tour, including Carnegie Hall. The group’s next record is scheduled for 2010. "The new album is the next step in the natural progression of Punch Brothers," says band member Gabe Witcher, "from a group first assembled to render Thile’s composition, The Blind Leaving the Blind, to a collective compositional entity in its own right."

The Punch Brothers' US tour is winding through the South this week, having stopped at the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center in Birmingham on Saturday. The Birmingham News gives the performance four stars, calling Chris Thile "extremely gifted, both as an instrumentalist and a composer," describing the band's music as "a distinctly modern sound that can be dramatic or lighthearted, solemn or joyful, rollicking or dissonant," and praising its "stellar musicianship. Thile and his bandmates can play just about anything and ace it."

Emmylou Harris and Punch Brothers will be among the performers at the 36th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival, to be held June 18-21, in Colorado. Punch Brothers, known for its boundary-breaking blend of musical styles, is slated to switch things up this year with a rare set of traditional bluegrass. Also among this year's participants are Elvis Costello, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and Edgar Meyer, a longtime Telluride performer and Chris Thile's duo partner on a 2008 Nonesuch release. Thile first befriended fellow Punch Brother Noam Pikelny at the festival in 2005.

"If it's difficult to describe the music that Chris Thile has been making since before he reached puberty, that's just the way he likes it." So says Frank Oteri in his introduction to an interview with Thile for New Music Box. "But even by his standards," Oteri continues, "the projects he's gotten involved with in the past couple of years completely confound expectations." Among those projects are Punch Brothers and its Nonesuch debut, Punch, and his self-titled debut duo record with bassist Edgar Meyer. "Now," Oteri suggests, "everything and anything is possible."

While 2008 may go down as one of the more turbulent years in recent (or distant) memory, or, more optimistically, a time of change, there is much to celebrate in the year in music. Nonesuch artists across all genres have contributed to that and, accordingly, have made their way onto many critics' lists of the year's best. Punch Brothers' US tour took them to the Walton Arts Center in Arkansas on Saturday, leading the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette to state: "No matter what music they touched, the Punch Brothers were quite amazing." The review calls The Blind Leaving the Blind, from the band's Nonesuch debut, Punch, "the most impressive piece of the night." An examination of that piece in The Gospel & Culture Project concludes: "[Chris] Thile has made music that shakes fans out of genre-bound identities, challenges attention spans, and undermines pre-conceptions of where great music is to be found. TBLTB can teach listeners new ways to experience music."

Randy Newman, The Black Keys, The Magnetic Fields, and Punch Brothers. It's quite an eclectic list of artists, but they all share one thing, in addition to being Nonesuch label mates: they've all made the list of the Top 100 of the Year's Best CDs from NPR's All Songs Considered. Punch Brothers are on the road again, touring the States, following Chris Thile's duo tour with bassist Edgar Meyer. Last night, the quintet performed at the University of Buffalo Center for the Arts. The Buffalo News says that as "Bach eventually begat Beethoven," so too has Punch Brothers taken "Bill Monroe’s speeded-up version of old-time country music and accelerating it into another century." The review calls Chris "ferociously gifted," Noam Pikelny's banjo playing "revelatory and a perfect counter for Thile’s high flying skills," and their bandmates' playing "masterful."
