Steve Reich's 2x5 and the Nonesuch Records / Indaba Music contest to remix the piece were featured on the BBC World Service's The Strand. The composer and Dominique Leone, the creator of the winning remix, talk about the contest, the classical roots of remixing, and why 2x5 lent itself to the process. "Steve Reich's music is so based in rhythm," says Leone, "so when you can take little chunks of it and manipulate that and exploit the rhythm that's already there, it's not very difficult to make something that sounds good." Hear the remix here.

Steve Reich's latest album, which pairs eighth blackbird's performance of the composer's Pulitzer Prize–winning piece Double Sextet with Bang on a Can's performance of 2x5, has now been named among the Top 10 Classical Albums of 2010 by NPR. "Steve Reich may be labeled a 'minimalist' composer," says NPR, "but the works on this recording are far more 'maximal' than simple repeating chords and mutating melodies."

Steve Reich is next week's BBC Radio 3 Composer of the Week. Each day next week, the program will present interviews with Reich and music from throughout his career, from 1965's groundbreaking It's Gonna Rain to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet, featured on his latest Nonesuch album. "Just as composers like Beethoven, Shostakovich and Mahler captured their era in their compositions," says the BBC, "so Reich's music distills the pulsating rhythm and routine of 21st century urban life."

Steve Reich's new album features Double Sextet and 2x5 performed by eighth blackbird and Bang on a Can, respectively. The Wall Street Journal calls Double Sextet "irresistible," saying that while Reich had "already won a place in music history ... [his] appeal to successive generations of performers is equally assured." The Philadelphia Inquirer gives the album an A, calling it "fascinating ... And yeah, it's really rocking!" Gramophone calls 2x5 "Steve Reich’s smartest, most sonically nourishing recording for years ... like an exploding diagram of the inner mechanics of a rock band playing at full tilt."
