News & Reviews

  • Congratulations to Kronos Quartet on receiving the 2018 WOMEX Artist Award. "To become a pioneer in one musical stream requires immense dedication, determination and, of course, prodigious skill and creativity," Jim Hickson writes of "the most important string quartet of their generation" in his introductory note for the WOMEX 2018 delegate guide. "To become such a leader in more than one stream must truly signal that there is some intense genius at work—genius that the Kronos Quartet possess in abundance."

  • In honor of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch puppeteer Caroll Spinney's retirement from Sesame Street after nearly 50 years, we revisit Kronos Quartet's trip to that beloved street in 1987 to talk with Big Bird about the string quartet and making music. "His open and kind-hearted view of the world and how we should treat each other is something we should forever aspire to," Kronos says of Spinney, and we concur.

  • About This Album

Kronos Quartet performs Polish composer Henryk Górecki's fist two string quartets for an album Time describes as “sanguine in its magisterial technique and confident in its calm, unmannered directness of expression.” Both pieces were commissioned by Lincoln Center and dedicated to Kronos, marking a renewal of the composer’s interest in instrumental music during a decade of writing mainly for the voice.
