The Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt and Sam Davol were on New Sounds' Soundcheck. Merritt spoke with host John Schaefer about the album 50 Song Memoir, for which he chronicled the first fifty years of his life with one song per year, and he and Davol performed songs from the album and more. Singer/songwriter/ukulelist Stephin Merritt and cellist Sam Davol of The Magnetic Fields stopped by the WNYC studios in New York City to perform on New Sounds' Soundcheck. Merritt spoke with host John Schaefer about the five-disc album 50 Song Memoir, for which he chronicled the first fifty years of his life with one song per year, and he and Davol performed two songs from the album—"'66 Wonder Where I'm From," and "'71 I Think I'll Make Another World"—as well as "Love Is Like a Bottle of Gin" from 69 Love Songs and "Josephine" from Distant Plastic Trees. The Magnetic Fields will bring 50 Song Memoir back to New York City and take the show to Pittsburgh and Toronto for the first time in June. The show, performed over two nights in each city (songs 1–25 on night one, songs 26–50 on night two), will be at the Apollo Theater in New York on June 15 and 16, Carnegie Music Hall of Oakland in Pittsburgh on June 19 and 20, and the Luminato Festival in Toronto on June 22 and 23.
