"John Adams' music comes to me constantly," says filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. "Discovering it was transformative and changed my life as a director forever." In a new essay, Nonesuch Records' Matthew Rankin explores the connection between the filmmaker and composer, whose music has featured in almost all of Guadagnino's films, from 2009's I Am Love to the just-released After the Hunt. Jonny Greenwood's score to Paul Thomas Anderson's film One Battle After Another is available digitally today; CD and LP versions are due November 14. The album features 18 new compositions performed by London Contemporary Orchestra, with conductor Hugh Tieppo-Brunt. Greenwood contributed piano, guitar, bass, percussion, and ondes Martenot. The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio Del Toro, and Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, is Greenwood's sixth Nonesuch-released Anderson film score. "Paul Thomas Anderson fans are well accustomed to how instrumental Jonny Greenwood's music is to the auteur’s body of work," Indiewire says of their collaborations: "Greenwood's original scores expertly capture Anderson's tones."

Portuguese singer and songwriter Carminho has released “O quarto (fado Menor),” the full version of the song she performs live in a scene with Emma Stone in Poor Things, the new film by Yorgos Lanthimos. The scene depicts Carminho singing the fado and playing the Portuguese guitar to a mesmerized Bella Baxter, Stone’s character in the film, which also stars Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo and has been nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards. Congratulations to David Byrne, who has been nominated for an Academy Award, with Ryan Lott (of Son Lux) and Mitski, for Original Song, for "This Is a Life," from the Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert film Everything Everywhere All at Once. You can hear it here. The film has received eleven Academy Award nominations, including Son Lux for Music (Original Score), another track from which features Randy Newman. The 95th Academy Awards will be held in Hollywood, airing live on ABC, on Sunday, March 12.

The Spike Lee–directed feature David Byrne's American Utopia will receive its US theatrical debut on Wednesday, September 15, in movie theaters nationwide for a special, one-night-only event. This event will also include an introduction by David Byrne and a never-before-seen conversation with Byrne and Lee. David Byrne's American Utopia returns to Broadway September 17. Tickets for both are on sale now.

Dan Auerbach will make his directorial debut in a documentary feature about Dr. John, aka Mac Rebennack. RadicalMedia has announced its partnership with Auerbach for the project, which will tell a story about the storied musician and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who died in 2019, and his impact in music and on the culture. Auerbach, who produced Dr. John's 2012 Grammy-winning Nonesuch album, Locked Down, says: "I’m still learning bits about him that I never knew, and I hope the movie provides a lens into the story of the life of Dr. John."

Clint Mansell's haunting score to director Darren Aronofsky's 2000 film Requiem for a Dream, performed by Kronos Quartet, returns to vinyl for the film's twentieth anniversary year, on December 4, 2020. The soundtrack was originally released on Nonesuch in 2000; the first vinyl edition was released for Record Store Day in 2016 with new artwork and two previously unreleased bonus tracks. The new 2-LP vinyl edition, which also includes the bonus tracks, features the original 2000 soundtrack cover art for the anniversary. "Brilliant stuff," says Classic FM.

The soundtrack to the Tim Burton–directed film of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, first released on Nonesuch in 2007, will receive its first-ever vinyl edition on November 13, 2020, in a two-LP set, available to pre-order now. The film, which won the Golden Globe for Best Picture, is an adaptation by John Logan of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s musical, starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and the late Alan Rickman. "Something close to a masterpiece, a work of extreme—I am tempted to say evil—genius," exclaimed the New York Times' A.O. Scott. "This Sweeney is a bloody wonder," raved Rolling Stone's Peter Travers, "intimate and epic, horrific and heart-rending as it flies on the wings of Sondheim's most thunderously exciting score."

Vagabon has released a new version of her song "Home Soon," featured in the new Lionsgate film Antebellum, starring Janelle Monáe. The song was originally released on Vagabon's critically acclaimed self-titled album, which Clash called an “indie-pop masterpiece.” The new mix can be heard here.

The HBO film of the Broadway show David Byrne’s American Utopia, directed by Spike Lee, will be the Opening Night Presentation of the 45th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Thursday, September 10. “This joyful film takes audiences on a musical journey about openness, optimism, and faith in humanity,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director and Co-Head, TIFF. “This is especially poignant at a time of great uncertainty around the world. We’re eager to share the excitement of Opening Night with audiences.”
