Audra McDonald and Dawn Upshaw will take the stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles tonight for the Opening Night Gala of the Los Angeles Philarmonic's 2008–09 season, the orchestra's last with conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen at its helm. Audra will sing Sondheim's "There Won't Be Trumpets" and Jule Styne / Sammy Cahn's "10,432 Sheep"; Dawn will perform songs from John Adams's Nixon in China and Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. The eclectic program also includes selections from Stravinsky's The Firebird.

Audra McDonald and Dawn Upshaw will both take the stage at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles tonight for the Opening Night Benefit Gala of the Los Angeles Philarmonic's 2008–09 season, the orchestra's last with conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen at its helm. Audra will sing "There Won't Be Trumpets" from the 1964 Sondheim musical Anyone Can Whistle and Jule Styne / Sammy Cahn's "10,432 Sheep." Dawn will perform the aria "This Is Prophetic" from John Adams's Nixon in China and "No Word from Tom" from Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. The eclectic program also includes Ligeti's Mysteries of the Macabre and Duke Ellington's Solitude; performing as well is soprano Barbara Hannigan. In between vocal performances, the Philharmonic will perform selections from Stravinsky's The Firebird.

Gala ticketed events include a pre-concert cocktail reception and a black-tie party after the performance. In addition to kicking off Salonen's 17th and final year as the orchestra's music director, the concert benefits the Los Angeles Philharmonic Musicians Pension Fund.

    Vagabon (aka Laetitia Tamko) will support the band Crumb on tour this October. The shows begin in California—Santa Cruz, Oakland, and Sacramento—then head to Salt Lake City and Denver and on to Texas—Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso—and Albuquerque and back to California to close out the tour in Santa Ana, San Diego, and Los Angeles.
