In the fifth and final season of The Wire, writes the Boston Herald's Mark A. Perigard in his "A-" review, "series creator David Simon continues to craft a living, breathing sociology course disguised as a drama." Covering the print media this season, Simon has created "a characterization so accurate many in this business will cringe," says Perigard.

For the as-yet uninitiated looking to join the show's die-hard fans, Perigard suggests doing a bit of background work at first: "Do yourself a favor and get the first season on DVD and work your way up," he writes. "The reward is more than worth the work."
