Brad Mehldau's "Live in Marciac" Named Album of the Year by DownBeat Readers; Mehldau, Pat Metheny, Joshua Redman Among Best

The results of the 76th annual DownBeat Readers Poll have been announced, and topping the list for Jazz Album of the Year is Brad Mehldau's solo CD/DVD Live in Marciac. Mehldau was also named the year's Best Pianist. Joining him among DownBeat readers' favorites are two Nonesuch artists with whom Mehldau has collaborated: Pat Metheny, named Best Guitarist, and Joshua Redman, named Best Tenor Saxophone. “There is no recording more befitting the title of Jazz Album of the Year than Brad Mehldau’s Live in Marciac," says DownBeat. "He is setting a new standard.”

The results of the 76th annual DownBeat Readers Poll have been announced, and topping the list for Jazz Album of the Year is Brad Mehldau's solo CD/DVD Live in Marciac, released earlier this year on Nonesuch Records. Mehldau was also named the year's Best Pianist and is featured in the December issue of the magazine. Joining him among DownBeat readers' favorites are two Nonesuch artists with whom Mehldau has collaborated: Pat Metheny, named Best Guitarist, and Joshua Redman, named Best Tenor Saxophone.

“This is one of the most exciting Readers Polls in decades,” says DownBeat publisher Frank Alkyer. “There is no recording more befitting the title of Jazz Album of the Year than Brad Mehldau’s Live in Marciac. Mehldau was also named Pianist of the Year. He is setting a new standard.”

Brad Mehldau and Joshua Redman, who recently toured the US together, bring their duo show to Europe in November, starting with a performance at the Teatro Central in Sevilla, Spain, on the 11th. Pat Metheny is in Europe now, touring with the Pat Metheny Trio, featuring bassist Larry Grenadier (also of the Brad Mehldau Trio) and drummer Bill Stewart.     Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion have released "To Music," a new track from their upcoming album, Rectangles and Circumstance, due June 14 on Nonesuch. You can watch the video, directed by Robert Edridge-Waks with photography by Daniel Kukla, here. Shaw and Sō co-wrote and performed the ten songs on the album, which they co-produced with Grammy-winning engineer Jonathan Low (The National, Taylor Swift).
