Mandolinist Chris Thile and guitarist Michael Daves kicked off their three-night run of sold-out shows at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City last night, performing songs from their debut duo album, Sleep with One Eye Open, released yesterday on Nonesuch Records. Thile and Daves are Rockwood regulars, having brought their high-octane interpretations of bluegrass standards to gigs there over the past several years. You can watch earlier performances from Rockwood at nonesuch.com/media and at thiledaves.com.

Anyone who pre-ordered Sleep with One Eye Open here in the Nonesuch Store and at thiledaves.com received an autographed CD and was entered to win a solid spruce-top Martin 000X1AE acoustic guitar. Folks who downloaded the free track "My Little Girl in Tennessee" at either site were entered to win as well. We are now delighted to announce the winner of the Martin guitar: Morgan Mecaskey of Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

"I'm thrilled to be the winner!" Mecaskey exclaimed upon learning the news. "Chris Thile and Michael Daves are a dynamic duo. Their music is both simple and complex, technical and musical, yet it reaches both the heart and head. Thile and Daves's interpretation of traditional bluegrass tunes is gutsy and honest, sung and played from the soul."

Congratulations, Morgan!

While the guitar may have been claimed, the free download of "My Little Girl in Tennessee" is still available at nonesuch.com and at thiledaves.com.

No Depression's Chris Mateer writes: "Sleep With One Eye Open is a smartly-paced and well-varied set of tunes, performed with celebratory vigor and and passion for the material. The pair clearly display their deep respect for the songs, and each other, while injecting their own visceral energy and distinct musical personalities and sensibilities." The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says of Thile and Daves: "The two obviously hit it off: the evidence is on this record."

Though Thile is known of late for his genre-bending work with Punch Brothers, the new duo album "is actually a traditional bluegrass album," says reviewer Jon M. Gilbertson. "Daves and Thile revel in the formal restrictions ... and really, both of them seem to be grinning almost constantly."
