James Farm, the self-titled debut album from the collaborative band featuring saxophonist Joshua Redman, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland, is due out on Nonesuch on April 26, two weeks from today. But no need to wait till then to hear the album. NPR is now streaming James Farm in its entirety as an NPR First Listen.

In addition to the band's "dedication to having memorable compositions" that encourage "abandoning yourself to the morphing groove," says NPR's Patrick Jarenwattananon, James Farm and all that was put into it offer much to recommend it.

"It's a bit like four of the best in the business just called a 'session' one day, but instead of standards, they each brought in their own music," Jarenwattananon writes. "And then they workshopped the arrangements and ironed out the kinks on the road, and only then put it on tape. So, instead of unsure and undercooked, it sounds taut and confident. It's one thing to play original music with others; it's another to have absorbed it over time, as a cohesive unit. And this band's labor has clearly proven fruitful."
