Kronos Quartet continues its multi-year residency at the University of Maryland's Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Last night's program included   the piece that spurred David Harrington to found the Quartet, George Crumb's 1973 anti-war piece Black Angels. On Sunday, the group performs Alternative Radio, featuring radio host David Barsamian in conversation with Diane Wilson, founder of the anti-war group Code Pink. David Harrington spoke with Bob Massey of the Washington Post's Express about the significance of these programs during this time of war; the article can be found at expressnightout.com.

With just days to go before the US Presidential election, any Cleveland residents in the battle-ground state of Ohio suffering from campaign fatigue might welcome the Cleveland Orchestra's weekend concert program, which includes John Adams's 1996 concerto Gnarly Buttons, called "charming and musically fascinating" by the Independent (UK). The program began last night and continues with performances this morning and tomorrow night.

The Metropolitan Opera production of Adams's 2005 opera Doctor Atomic continue this weekend with a Saturday night performance. Tickets and info at metoperafamily.org.

Laurie Anderson returns to Europe this weekend for two performances at De Oosterpoort in the Dutch city of Groningen, as part of its Americans Festival. Tonight's program includes works by Michael Gordon, John Zorn, and Arvo Pärt, as well as the Netherlands premiere of her piece "Amelia Earhart." Laurie performs her latest work, Homeland, at the festival Saturday night.

David Byrne continues his Songs of David Byrne & Brian Eno tour at Boston's Wang Center tonight and The Borgata in Atlantic City on Sunday. After last night's performance at the Metropolis in Montreal, the city's Gazette calls the pair's oeuvre "an evocative work, marked by Eno's warm, playful music and Byrne's poetic, thought-provoking lyrics and vocals," and reports that "it was Byrne's enchanting, understated charisma and effortless artistic grace that stole the show."

Malian kora master Toumani Diabaté begins a two-week US tour tomorrow at the Somerville Theatre outside of Boston, followed by a Sunday night show at New York City's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at NYU, presented by the World Music Institute. The New Yorker describes the songs from his most recent release, The Mandé Variations as "deeply meditative compositions" that "promise to be quite stirring" in concert.

After last weekend's performances in Brazil, Bill Frisell and his Trio, featuring Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen, head to Portugal for two dates that kick off an extensive European tour. In these concerts, the group sets music to films by Buster Keaton, Bill Morrison, and Jim Woodring. On Saturday, they''ll be at the Centro de Artes do Espectaculo in Portalegre, and on Sunday they'll head to the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.

The Brad Mehldau Trio continues its European tour with two performances in Austria this weekend. Tonight, the Trio of Brad, Larry Grenadier, and Jeff Ballard perform at the Grosse Universitätsaula in Salzburg, and tomorrow they play the Treibhaus Club in Innsbruck.

As we reported earlier this week, Randy Newman regretfully has had to postpone his European tour due to severe back pain; the first concert was scheduled to for Saturday in Berlin. Ticket holders should contact individual promoters and venues for refund information.

Sam Phillips concludes the West Coast leg of her Don't Do Anything tour with two sets at San Francisco's famous jazz venue Yoshi's Saturday night. The first set begins at 8 PM, the second at 10 PM. BeyondChron, San Francisco's alternative online daily, insists, "Oh, you do not want to miss this one ... Phillips is a truly amazing performer, and there is really no one quite like her."

The Joshua Redman Trio continues its tour of Europe with another stop in the Netherlands. After last night's performance at BimHuis in Amsterdam, Redman, Reuben Roger, and Brian Blade are in Rotterdam tonight to play the Lantaren/Venster. They head to Switzerland for a show at the Théâtre Municipal de Lausanne Saturday before heading back to Holland for a show at the Oosterport in Groningen early next week.

Steve Reich's Triple Quartet, originally written for Kronos Quartet and premiered by the group at the Kennedy Center in 1999, receives a number of performances in Korea by the Smith Quartet over the coming days, including Saturday's in Goyang and Sunday's in Incheon. Also on the program is Philip Glass's String Quartet No. 5, which was also written for Kronos and included on the 1995 album Kronos Quartet Performs Philip Glass.

Dawn Upshaw comes to Carnegie Hall on Sunday evening for a program in Zankel Hall with the Ensemble ACJW led by conductor and pianist Stephen Prutsman. On the program are Osvaldo Golijov's "Lúa Descolorida," David Bruce's Piosenki, and the world premiere of a piece by musical inventor Michael Ward-Bergeman. Bruce and Ward-Bergeman met two years ago at a Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop for composers and singers led by Upshaw and Golijov.

As reported earlier, Wilco band members Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, and Pat Sansone will play a free Concert for Change in support of the Obama campaign at the Union Theater in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday. Participants will then head to the polls to vote early.

    Vagabon (aka Laetitia Tamko) will support the band Crumb on tour this October. The shows begin in California—Santa Cruz, Oakland, and Sacramento—then head to Salt Lake City and Denver and on to Texas—Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso—and Albuquerque and back to California to close out the tour in Santa Ana, San Diego, and Los Angeles.
