Brad Mehldau, drummer Mark Guiliana (with whom he paired up for the Grammy-nominated album Mehliana: Taming the Dragon), and guitarist John Scofield take their European tour to two Benelux festivals this weekend, performing at the Gent Jazz Festival, on the Main Stage, in Belgium tonight, and the Hudson Stage at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Sunday. The Telegraph, reviewing the trio’s set at the Love Supreme Festival last weekend, writes: “Guiliana’s polythymic patterning was always ingenious, Mehldau’s post-bop acoustic piano always tasteful, and Scofield’s high soft-edged keening always admirable.”

Pat Metheny appears at both festivals as well, commencing a run of nine European dates with bassist Ron Carter. They play the Main Stage at Gent Jazz tonight and the Amazon Stage at North Sea Jazz on Saturday. The Guardian gives four stars to Metheny’s recent run of shows with his quartet in London, calling it a “tour de force from an improv king.”

St Germain performs at the North Sea Jazz as well this weekend; he and Lianne La Havas each perform sets at Gent Jazz next week.

Artwork by Laurie Anderson is included in an exhibition at the Vito Schnabel Gallery in St. Moritz, Switzerland, opening today and running through September 4. Titled A Selection of Works from the 1980s, the exhibition includes works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Julian Schnabel, Andy Warhol, and others.

---

Timo Andres’s new piano concerto, The Blind Banister, a response to Beethoven’s Concerto No. 2, is given its New York premiere, as part of Beethoven/5, a series of new works commissioned for pianist Jonathan Biss by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, at Caramoor Center for Music & the Arts in Katonah on Sunday afternoon. Biss joins conductor Joshua Weilerstein and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, which co-commissioned the piece along with Caramoor. In a preview of the new concerto and a look at Andres’s work, the New Yorker writes, “the piece is at once gently private and powerfully communal in its gestures and devices.”

---

Tyondai Braxton performs a solo electronic set, accompanied by visuals from Grace Villamil, at the Nuit New York music and art festival at Le 104 in Paris tonight.

Braxton, who made his Nonesuch Records debut with the release of HIVE1 last year, released a new five-song EP, Oranged Out, last month via Bandcamp as a pay-what-you-want download, with proceeds supporting the work of Everytown for Gun Safety.

---

Emmylou Harris kicks off a co-headlining tour with Lyle Lovett & His Large Band with two shows in California: at the Santa Barbara Bowl tonight and The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The two legendary musicians make additional stops throughout the country over the next month.

---

After the weeekend, Lake Street Dive will perform live from its Nonesuch Records debut album, Side Pony, on the Today show, first thing Monday morning. Fans across the US can tune in on their local NBC station then.

---

Robert Plant continues his month-long tour of Europe and the UK with two shows in Spain: a headlining set at the Cruilla Festival at Parc del Fòrum in Barcelona on Saturday, and a performance at the Bilbao Arena Miribilla in Bilbao on Sunday.

---

Joshua Redman launches a week-long European run with a new Quartet—pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Jorge Rossy—with two festival sets: at the Rovinj Jazz Festival in Croatia tonight and Jazz an Einem Sommerabend in Krefeld, Germany, on Saturday.

Redman’s first duo album with longtime friend and collaborator Brad Mehldau, Nearness, recorded live on tour in Europe, will be released September 9. The album is available to pre-order now with an instant download of the opening track, “Ornithology.”

---

The Staves play their first of four North American summer festival appearances, with music from their new EP, Sleeping In A Car, and 2015 Nonesuch debut album, If I Was, at the Winnipeg Folk Festival tonight.

The trio will appear at the Newport Folk, Edmonton, and Eaux Claires festivals this summer. As recently reported in the Nonesuch Journal, the sisters were last week’s featured guests on the Acoustic Café radio show. You can hear their performance and interview here.
