    Nonesuch Events for the Weekend of June 28–30

    The Joshua Redman Quartet—pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson—performs at Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York on Sunday, as part of Saratoga Jazz Festival.

    The quartet plays music from Come What May, its first album in nearly two decades, released in March on Nonesuch Records. The Times of London gives the album four stars, writing that “nothing beats the cool confidence of a band who have spent years on the road. It also helps that the seven Redman tunes here are so good ... Four men playing as one.”

    Sam Amidon concludes his US tour as special guest of singer-songwriter and pianist Bruce Hornsby this weekend, with concerts at The Majestic in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, tonight; Smith Opera House in Geneva, New York, on Saturday; and Tupelo Music Hall in Derry, New Hampshire, on Sunday.

    Lake Street Dive continues its summer US tour at The Palace Theatre in Minneapolis tonight and Saturday, followed by a set at Henry W. Maier Festival Park in Milwaukee on Sunday, as part of Summerfest.

    Robert Plant and his band the Sensational Space Shifters bring music from his latest album, Carry Fire, and more to Svalbard Huset in Longyearbyen, Norway, on Saturday. NPR calls Carry Fire “transfixing,” adding that "Plant and his collaborators create music that overflows with irrepressible life force ... Carry Fire is rivetingly intimate.”

    Caroline Shaw and her vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth perform a sold-out show at Caramoor Spanish Courtyard in Katonah, New York, tonight, as part of Caramoor Summer Music Festival. The program includes Shaw’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Partita for 8 Voices, as well as works by William Brittelle, Tune-Yards’ Merrill Garbus, Ted Hearne, and Missy Mazzoli. There is also a pre-concert conversation with Shaw and members of Roomful of Teeth.

    Shaw’s album Orange, on which Attacca Quartet performs six of her pieces for string quartet, has been named one of “The Best Albums of 2019 (So Far)” by NPR Music. Brittelle’s Spiritual America—performed by Wye Oak, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, and Metropolis Ensemble—was released last month via New Amsterdam and Nonesuch Records. Uncut calls the album “musically adventurous and emotionally resonant.”

    Yola is in the United Kingdom this weekend, opening for The Killers at a sold-out concert at Cardiff Castle tonight and playing a set at Worthy Farm’s Avalon Stage for the sold-out Glastonbury Festival on Sunday.

    Yola’s Dan Auerbach–produced debut album, Walk Through Fire, has also been named one of “The Best Albums of 2019 (So Far)” by NPR Music, which says it’s an “exhilarating” album that “encapsulates country-soul lustiness, plushly orchestrated pop transcendence and a range of expression both subtle and striking.”

    Randy Newman has announced an international An Evening with Randy Newman tour for 2020, beginning with Australia and New Zealand in January and February—his first tour of Australia since 2011, and his first ever tour of New Zealand. Further dates, in Europe in spring 2020, will be announced shortly.
