The Pat Metheny Unity Band—Chris Potter on sax and bass clarinet, Antonio Sanchez on drums, and Ben Williams on bass—takes its month-long European tour to Italy this week. That follows Sunday's show at London's Barbican Hall, to which the Guardian gives four stars, calling the Unity Band "a group of blazing virtuosi with musical intelligence to match." Jazzwise says: "Metheny’s solos remain a thing of wonder: melodic at any tempo and packed with fresh ideas." The European tour continues through July 22; the US tour begins at the Caramoor Festival on July 29.

The Pat Metheny Unity Band—featuring a new ensemble from the guitarist with Chris Potter on sax and bass clarinet, longtime collaborator Antonio Sanchez on drums, and the up-and-coming Ben Williams on bass—began the third week of its month-long tour of Europe with a performance at Barbican Hall in London this past Sunday night.

The Guardian gives the show four stars. The set included all of the songs from the band's new album of the same name, released on Nonesuch in June, "from rapid-fire postbop cascades through country-inflected ballads to exultant synth-guitar anthems," writes the Guardian's John Fordham. "As a group of blazing virtuosi with musical intelligence to match, these four could make that chemistry work afresh for years."

In the Jazzwise magazine concert review, writer Mike Flynn says "Metheny’s solos remain a thing of wonder: melodic at any tempo and packed with fresh ideas, his fertile imagination and phenomenal technique show no signs of flagging." Flynn concludes: "Metheny remains one of the all time greats and the Unity Band, while unifying the many creative strands of his career so far, ultimately provides him with total freedom, wherever he feels like going today."

The Unity Band has now made its way to Italy, where the group performs at Padova's Stadio Euganeo tonight, followed by shows in Perugia, Rome, and Bard, in addition to a stop in the republic of San Marino for its jazz festival this Friday, July 13. The European tour continues with shows in France, Spain, and Portugal through Sunday, July 22. The band launches its US tour starting at the Caramoor Festival in Katonah, New York, on July 29.
