The cast recording of Stephen Sondheim's Road Show was released this summer. Sondheim and the writer of the show's book, John Weidman, discuss the work on KCRW's Bookworm Thursday afternoon. The cast recording of Road Show, the latest musical collaboration of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim and writer John Weidman, was released in June on Nonesuch Records and PS Classics. It tells the tale of the real-life Mizner brothers, striving and frequently scheming to realize the American dream in early 20th-century America. The show's creators, Sondheim and Weidman, will appear on Bookworm, on 89.9 FM KCRW, Santa Monica public radio, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 PM, to talk with the show's host, Michael Silverblatt, about the new work and the long road that led to this cast recording. You can listen online at kcrw.com/bookworm.

Through the story of the two Mizner brothers, Addison and Wilson, Road Show tackles a very timely issue: the elevation of greed, the idea that no matter what their level of deception, perpetrators of social crimes need never apologize or confess.

In the Bookworm interview, titled "Lyrics as Literature," Sondheim and Weidman discuss the show's previous incarnations and its evolution over the years, pared down to its essentials on the way to the end result, heard on the cast recording.

"This is, and will be, the classical American musical," Silverblatt tells the Los Angeles Times in a behind-the-scenes look at the broadcast. "It will be on the special list of things that shape America, the way Americans look at themselves."

"One of my favorite music labels has a momentous birthday: Nonesuch Records is turning 60 this year," says Deepa Fernandes, co-host of NPR's Here & Now, who spoke with Nonesuch President David Bither to mark the occasion. "Nonesuch has likely influenced your musical diet even if you didn't know it." "It's very hard to say what is a Nonesuch record," Bither says. "It's not a particular genre, but maybe it represents a particular kind of ambition and originality. There's a passionate audience for the music we've tried to champion." You can hear their conversation and several musical selections from over the years here.

"Alynda Segarra is a great singer and songwriter who is also a keen observer of what's really going on out there," eTown host Nick Forster says of his guest, aka Hurray for the Riff Raff, "including struggles and oppression and injustice and drug addiction and also love and dancing and friendship and nature. It's another beautiful journey." Segarra made their debut on the show this weekend, accompanied by Johnny Wilson to perform songs from the new album The Past Is Still Alive and more, including a finale of "Midnight Special," with fellow guest Peter One.
