Pianist Jeremy Denk, whose Nonesuch Records debut album, Ligeti/Beethoven, was released last month, recently invited NPR into his apartment in New York City as he sat down to practice the Ligeti Piano Etudes featured on the album. Watch the video below.

Ligeti/Beethoven, which pairs Books One and Two of the etudes with Beethoven’s Sonata No. 32 in C Minor, Op. 111, was just named one of NPR Music's 25 Favorite Albums of 2012 (So Far). NPR's Anastasia Tsioulcas, who co-produced the new video, describes it on the Favorite Albums list as "a musical puzzle box that few other musicians could or would even dare consider. What makes the seemingly impossible a reality is Jeremy Denk's genius—his technical prowess, insight, wit and ardor have resulted in an album that people are going to be talking about for years to come."

Jeremy Denk joins the San Francisco Symphony for three concerts at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco this week, Thursday through Saturday, performing Liszt's Piano Concert No. 1. For more on this and other upcoming performances from Denk, go to nonesuch.com/on-tour.

To pick up a copy of Ligeti/Beethoven, head to the Nonesuch Store, where CD orders include instant downloads of the album at checkout; the album is also available to purchase there as MP3s and lossless FLAC.

The Library of Congress has acquired the collection of manuscripts, instruments, costumes, video and audio recordings, and more from Kronos Quartet and its non-profit organization, Kronos Performing Arts Association. “It’s gratifying to know that Kronos’ legacy will be preserved in perpetuity alongside the manuscripts and other treasures of so many other influential musicians from the US and around the world," said KPAA Executive Director Janet Cowperthwaite. "We are perhaps even more excited to reflect upon all the musicians and scholars who will have access to these materials in years to come, informing their own work and carrying Kronos’ inspiration and influence into the future.” The Library also appointed Kronos founder, artistic director, and violinist David Harrington as the Kluge Chair in Modern Culture and inducted Kronos’ 1992 album Pieces of Africa into the National Recording Registry.
