Bass & Mandolin, the second recording collaboration by bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile, is due out next Tuesday, September 9, on Nonesuch Records. But you don't need to wait till then to hear it. The new album of original tunes, which comes six years after their recording debut as a duo, Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile, is streaming in full this week as a Check Ahead feature from NPR member station WNYC's Soundcheck at wnyc.org.

"Bass & Mandolin features a constant give and take between melody and accompaniment," says Soundcheck's Katie Bishop. "More than anything, it's easy to hear how much fun these two have playing together. Both of the duo's albums are filled with songs flavored by a back-and-forth, bet-you-can't-catch-me playfulness and humor that can only come of the tightest musical relationships. On Bass & Mandolin, that relationship is a little older and a little wiser—and sounds all the more comfortable and relaxed for it."

Read more and listen to the complete album, streaming in full at wnyc.org.

To pre-order Bass & Mandolin, head to iTunes or the Nonesuch Store for an instant download of the album track "Tarnation."

Bass & Mandolin, says The Bluegrass Situation's Cameron Matthews, "is about to set the bluegrass and classical realms on fire." Thile and Meyer joined The Bluegrass Situation and Mason Jar Music during a recent visit to Telluride, Colorado, to perform a track from the new album, "Why Only One?," for a Mountain Session, which you can watch below.

The Library of Congress has acquired the collection of manuscripts, instruments, costumes, video and audio recordings, and more from Kronos Quartet and its non-profit organization, Kronos Performing Arts Association. “It’s gratifying to know that Kronos’ legacy will be preserved in perpetuity alongside the manuscripts and other treasures of so many other influential musicians from the US and around the world," said KPAA Executive Director Janet Cowperthwaite. "We are perhaps even more excited to reflect upon all the musicians and scholars who will have access to these materials in years to come, informing their own work and carrying Kronos’ inspiration and influence into the future.” The Library also appointed Kronos founder, artistic director, and violinist David Harrington as the Kluge Chair in Modern Culture and inducted Kronos’ 1992 album Pieces of Africa into the National Recording Registry.
