Hurray for the Riff Raff (aka Alynda Segarra) releases their Nonesuch Records debut album, LIFE ON EARTH, today. “Alynda Segarra’s powerful … album exudes a glorious irreverence," says Pitchfork, naming it this week's Best New Music. "Their self-described 'nature punk' songs are both intimate and immense, and they’ve never sounded more honest or self-possessed … Segarra’s melodies, some so beautiful that they seem to have existed forever, make them stay.” Uncut exclaims: "A major step forward for one of today’s most vital artists. The first great album of 2022." NPR says: "[Segarra] has a voice rooted in history, making music to change the present … the voice of the future." Hurray for the Riff Raff shares the album in an NPR Listening Party today. They tour North America this spring and head to the UK and Europe this summer.

Hurray for the Riff Raff, aka Alynda Segarra, marked the release of their Nonesuch debut album, LIFE ON EARTH, on Friday as the guest on NPR's World Cafe. They performed four songs from the album—"PIERCED ARROWS," "POINTED AT THE SUN," "LIFE ON EARTH," and "SAGA"—and spoke with host Stephen Kallao about the making of the album and more. "At its heart," says Kallao, "when so many things are terribly frustrating, Life on Earth is an affirmation of humanity and how we can bring joy to ourself and others in difficult times." You can hear the session here.

Hurray for the Riff Raff (aka Alynda Segarra) releases “PIERCED ARROWS,” a new song on Nonesuch today. The track is from Segarra’s Nonesuch debut, LIFE ON EARTH, out February 18; its video, which you can see here, is directed by New Orleans-based artist Lucia Honey. Segarra calls it "a heartbreak song, lost in the realm of memory. Being stuck in the past, and finding the rapidly changing world uncanny and bizarre. Trying to outrun trauma. Finding a meeting place between tough and tender. Memory replaying inside/beside you, triggering fight or flight responses.”

Hurray for the Riff Raff (aka Alynda Segarra) has released “JUPITER'S DANCE,” a new song from their upcoming Nonesuch debut album, LIFE ON EARTH, due February 18. Segarra says it's "a song in the shape of a guardian angel. Protection prayer for us all as we live in uncertain and violent times. Manifesting blessings into reality. Posing the question that perhaps the future could be joyous as well as terrifying?” The video, directed by Segarra, is a collection of historical footage of the Bomba and Plena traditions in Puerto Rico, clips Segarra shot on a hand-held camcorder during lockdown, recording studio footage captured by Joshua Shoemaker, and visuals of outer space from NASA. You can watch it here.

LIFE ON EARTH, the Nonesuch debut of Hurray for the Riff Raff (aka Alynda Segarra), due February 18, is a departure for the Bronx-born, New Orleans-based singer/songwriter. Its eleven new "nature punk" tracks on the theme of survival are music for a world in flux—songs about thriving, not just surviving, while disaster is happening. The album was recorded during the pandemic with producer Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Bon Iver, Kevin Morby). While making it, Segarra drew inspiration from The Clash, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Bad Bunny, and the author of Emergent Strategy, adrienne maree brown. "A major step forward for one of today's most vital artists," exclaims Uncut. "The first great album of 2022." Pre-order to download the track "RHODODENDRON" now—you can watch the video here—and get a limited-edition print autographed by Segarra, while they last. Hurray for the Riff Raff tours North America this spring; international dates coming soon.
